My Nutrition Philosophy

A Non-Diet Approach – As a non-diet Registered Dietitian, I help you step away from the restrictive rules of diet culture and instead focus on building a positive, trusting relationship with food. My approach isn’t about quick fixes or achieving a certain weight—it’s about supporting your overall well-being. I guide you in making sustainable, personalized choices that feel good for your body and align with your unique needs, without relying on guilt, shame, or rigid dieting practices.

Eating Competence – I practice from an Eating Competence framework. Eating Competence is a research-based framework that emphasizes trust, satisfaction, and confidence in your eating habits. At its core, Eating Competence is about reconnecting with your body’s natural cues and needs while balancing nourishment with pleasure. This approach has been shown to promote not only a more enjoyable relationship with food but also tangible health benefits.

Research shows that individuals with higher Eating Competence are more likely to have:
  • Better physical health, including lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, and healthier body weights.
  • Greater psychological well-being, with reduced stress around food and fewer disordered eating behaviors.
  • Improved dietary quality, as eating competence encourages variety, balance, and satisfaction without rigidity or restriction.
By fostering a sense of trust in your body’s signals, Eating Competence helps you eat in a way that supports your overall health without the need for strict rules or deprivation. It’s not just about feeling joy in eating—it’s about creating habits that lead to long-term health and well-being.

My Philosophy – I believe that eating should feel simple and stress-free, like something you can trust yourself to do with ease. I’m here to help you reconnect with your body and develop a relationship with food rooted in self-care, not self-control. My philosophy is grounded in the idea that food is meant to nourish, energize, and bring joy. Together, we’ll cut through the noise of diet culture, clarify what truly matters for your health, and create sustainable habits that enhance both your confidence and competence. My goal is to empower you with the knowledge and practical strategies you need to navigate eating with balance, freedom, and trust in yourself.

About Me

Hi, I’m Whitney.
I grew up in Indiana, where I played sports, played the flute in band, participated in clubs, and enjoyed school. I went to a Division III college where I ran cross country and track while getting a degree in Psychology. I had a lovely life. I also struggled with disordered eating and poor body image.

This started in middle school. Being thin was very important to me, and I created very restrictive rules about what and how much I could eat. I started out small (genetics make me a smaller person), but with my restrictive diet, I got thinner. I got praise for how tiny I was from other middle school girls AND adults. I could have kept this tight control forever. It wasn’t until a health scare happened that made me think I was going to die if I didn’t change, so I changed.
Eventually, my eating became a little less restrictive, but I continued to struggle with my eating and body image. I wanted to be thin, I wanted to be healthy, and that meant rules around food.
The older I got and the more complex life got, the less I was able to keep control over my eating.
I knew lots of (contradictory) rules to follow. And I also knew I wasn’t following them.
Only eat one sweet per week” Got it. Locked in.
Except I would secretly eat more and then feel guilty.
Limit your serving size.” You betcha.
Except I was still hungry, and those times I did eat more, I apologized to others because I felt like I was doing something wrong.
Don’t eat ____.
But then I would binge on it, feeling embarrassed, hiding the evidence.
Whether it was a rule, a suggestion, or a guideline, it only led me to try to restrict or limit foods, want them more, eat them, and feel shame. It was a bad cycle. I was chasing perfection, and I felt guilty when I failed. On top of this struggle with these hard feelings, I also wasn’t eating enough nourishing foods in amounts I needed. I had low energy, terrible mental health, and ended up being deficient in a variety of micronutrients.

All of this eventually inspired me to pursue a career in dietetics. Through my education and training, I gained the skills to understand the complexities of nutrition and developed a practical, sustainable way of eating that genuinely supports health and well-being without the stress of perfection.

My own experiences with food and body image, and the freedom I’ve found along the way, have shaped my approach to helping others. I’m passionate about guiding people toward a more peaceful relationship with food, breaking free from restrictive rules, and embracing a gentler, more sustainable path to nourishment.

Outside of my dietetics practice, you can often find me leading fitness classes at my gym, taking self-defense classes, exploring hiking trails, coloring and playing dress up with my niece over facetime, or cozied up on the couch enjoying a good book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eating Competence is being positive, comfortable, and flexible with eating as well as matter-of-fact and reliable about getting enough to eat of enjoyable food.” It is going to meals hungry (not starving!) and eating until you are full. It is eating foods you enjoy in amounts that make you feel satisfied. It’s thinking about what will support your nutrition needs, but not being so controlling that you don’t eat foods that bring you joy. It’s eating nutritious foods and stopping when you’re full, and it’s also eating until you’re stuffed at a holiday; it’s overeating sometimes and underrating others because you aren’t perfect, and that’s okay. It’s eating something because you want more, or it’s stopping because you know you can have more another time. It’s being okay with eating in response to your hunger, what you have on hand, your feelings, your schedule, or any other reason. It’s being flexible and trusting yourself.

Research shows that those who are more eating competent end up being better nutritionally, are more active, sleep better, and have better medical tests.

For more information on Eating Competence, visit The Ellyn Satter Institute.

Each session is individualized based on YOUR needs and goals. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

To ensure I can best understand your needs and goals, we’ll spend the first session reviewing your intake paperwork, diving deeper into your goals, and creating actionable steps for you to start implementing right away.

In follow-up sessions, we will continue navigating your challenges relating to food, implement realistic solutions that fit your needs, and practice skills around food and eating that support your goals.

I use a non-diet approach based in the Eating Competence model, a research-based approach to healthy relationships with food and eating. This approach includes practicing being in our bodies while eating. Often, we have the knowledge about what we need to eat, but it doesn’t translate to our bodies and truly experiencing trust with ourselves around food.

Instead of creating more food rules, I will help you attune to your internal cues and trust yourself with knowing what, when, and how much to eat no matter the situation.

I’ll also help you figure out where the nutrition research fits with the reality of your life.

For example, let’s imagine someone is regularly extremely hungry at night and feels out of control with food during that time. We discover that they don’t eat breakfast. They explain they aren’t hungry in the morning, they don’t have time to eat, or [insert reason].
Eating more earlier in the day will likely help, and also there are valid reasons this isn’t happening.

The recommendation: Eat breakfast.

The reality: no hunger, no time, etc.

Here’s where this person and I work together to figure out where research meets with reality in their life.
It’s easy to say “do this.” It’s harder to figure out if and how that actually fits in your life. I’ll get into the nuanced areas and work with you to figure out personalized solutions.

Yes! Research shows that those who are eating competent have better diets, better metabolic profiles, lower BMIs, and have higher levels of physical activity. Read more here.
